Another article that I just felt compelled to pass on The author, Becky is a great gal and really know what she's talking about!
How Bartering Can Change Your Business
I like to get a bargain as much as the next person. However, I also
realize that sometimes you "get what you pay for."
For example, let's say you wanted to cut corners by hosting your
site for free. Chances are, you'd have a webhost that would put
ugly banners or other advertisements on your site, you'd probably
have a long, unmemorable domain, and customer support would be
nonexistent.
You don't want that. This is one of those cases where you should
spend the money and get it done right. This doesn't mean that you
aren't going to go searching for a inexpensive webhost, however.
I understand that money can be tight when you're just starting out.
However, your attitude at this point in the game is very important.
You see, you're a business person now. This means that you make
your living selling goods or services to someone else. You expect
people to pay you, because you are providing something of value to
them.
Yet time and again I run into aspiring business owners who want all
the tools and information to run their business just handed to
them...for free. In other words, they live with the expectation
that the internet is still a gigantic "free for all," yet they
fully expect others to pay them for their goods and services.
Don't get caught in this trap. Your attitude will affect your
business.
A few things could happen if you start getting stuck in the mindset
that everything on the internet should be free except for what you
provide...
Listen, your customers could start to pick up on this attitude.
They may get turned off because you are indirectly showing a
superior attitude (i.e., no one's stuff is worth a dime except for
your own). Or perhaps even worse, you will attract like minded
people to you. That means you won't have any customers at all, only
freebie seekers who are waiting for you to hand over your whole
store.
Another thing that is silently working in the background is that
you are focusing on your own scarcity instead of the abundance in
your life. For example, you are worried that you don't have enough
money to pay a web designer or get a logo created. By focusing on
what you DON'T have, you'll attract more of the same...a big
NOTHING. Nada. Zero. Zilch. Scarcity.
Does this mean that you shouldn't look for free or inexpensive
deals? Of course not. Everyone likes a deal. Everyone likes
something for free. If you can find it, good for you. But if you
can't, don't focus on the scarcity.
The solution? You can barter your way through the start-up stages
of your business. Bartering is simply exchanging goods and services
(generally of equal value). For example, let's suppose that you are
a great editor, but you can't design a website. You find a website
designer, and offer to edit their ebook in exchange for design
services.
I'll let you in on a little secret: bartering is not just about
exchanging goods and services to meet your needs. Bartering is also
about abundance and putting a value on your business.
You see, when you start to barter, you are forced to attach a price
tag to your time, to your products, etc. Many times we undervalue
ourselves. But the mere act of assigning a price is a big step. It
says our time and talents are extremely valuable. And when we can
give our time and talents away, even if we get something back as is
the case with a barter exchange, we are back to focusing on
abundance.
Do you see what happened? Your entire attitude can shift. Instead
of focusing on scarcity by thinking about how little money you have
to get started, you are now thinking about your assets and their
value.
So go ahead and start bartering your way through the beginning of
your business. Not only will you acquire a lot of useful goods and
services, you will experience an attitude shift that attracts
abundance. Remember, like attracts like.
What are YOUR thoughts attracting into your life?
