My daughter is asking for a hamster, bunny, or some kind of small furry animal. My daughter will be 6 next month. She loves pets. We have a black lab who is 7 years old. We had a cat, but I was terribly allergic so we had to give her away. Thankfully my niece took her and they have been living happily together for a couple of years.

Any words of wisdom from pet owners out there?

Well, from what I hear bunnies are not good to have. They get very nervous, and do not adapt well to any change, like moving, someone different taking care of them,or travel. They are also known to get so nervous that they die.
Sorry if there is anyone who knows/or heard different, but I had 1 when I was younger, and she went crazy and died.I have looked into getting one for my kids , an dalways run into the same answers.

My son did have a hampster a few years ago.It did great, but I would say get a young one.Ours was about a year, and everytime we picked him up he hissed!
A friend of mine had 2 guinea pigs and loved them, but like all small pets they stink!
Hope you guys find the right pet for you!

My recommendation would be a guniea pig. I grew up with them and they were great. All caged animals will have a funky smell but if your 6 yr old is ready to care for a small animal on a daily basis, I don't think there would be a problem.

I have always wanted a rat but hubby says no way Laughing

My daughter just got a dwarf hamster a few weeks ago and she loves it. I grew up with teddy bear hamsters, but this guy is cuter. I'm talking my son into getting a black bear hamster. Laughing The pet store we go to is awesome. This hamster of her's was born at the store, so all the employees handled them regularly. That was a big plus in my book!

Rabbits are not good housepets. They smell worse because they are bigger. So they go to the bathroom more. Wink I wouldn't worry about the nervousness of them though. If you have it from a baby then it will be used to being handled. I've seen rabbits that are trained to go in litter boxes and just wonder around the house like a cat. I grew up with lots of rabbits, but they were outside animals.

Also, if you are allergic to cats, then I'd say you are allergic to the rabbits as well. Spend some time around them before you bring them home! Would be horrible to have to find a home for another pet. Sad

Thanks for all the informaiton. Her birthday is in a few weeks, so I guess we will be getting something. I don't think we'll go with a rabbit.

My brother's family has a hamster that they put in a ball and the hamster rolls around the house to get exercise. My daughter just loved that.

I feel bad that she can't have a cat, but she understands that I can't do that because of allergies.

I'll let you know what we end up with.
