I am researching link directory programs. I know that link farms can ruin your site and get you banned from google and more. But what good programs are out there for building directories? Are there any?
Or am I just better off going in and building my own pages with catagories? I was really looking for the referral/rating system that goes with the programs as well. Seems like a good incentive to get referrals to the site. _________________ Val

You probably knew what my answer was going to be already ... LOL! This would be my recommendation.

It's so tempting to take the easy way out. I know we all want to have things automated to make it easier. BUT that doesn't always mean better. YES it really is better to do it from scratch. Did you know I won't even bother doing a link exchange with those who have those automated directories set up? I get nothing out of it, so I don't bother.
Actually, I'm starting to wonder if Google is frowning on link exchanges as a whole. This is pure speculation, but it appears Google isn't counting any back links from link exchanges. Don't take this as fact, but it's something to think about.
Either way, do it from scratch if you do it at all. _________________ ~Kara Kelso~

Kara, what about something like http://www.linkmetro.com/.
I gave them a try a couple weeks ago and added a craft directory and links page. I'm doing the free version of adding all the links manually. I've added about 20 links to the craft directory and 9 on the links page.
I add a few every day and wait till they are approved by the other websites, then I request a few more... So I'm only adding a few a week.
That way I'm not searching all over the internet for people to link with me. I already know that these other craft sites want to link with me too. I've been picking ones that have a PR of 2 or higher so that it will help my site, even though I don't have a rating on my site yet But I've only been turned down my one site so far, so all the links are pretty good ones.

That's exactly what I'm talking about Bev. Note how the pages are in PHP, which search engines practically ignore (and actually if you notice the boards have a mod which makes pages for visitors .html). Not saying I'd deny someone if they already linked to me just for that, but when searching for link exchanges I'll pass on directories like that.
I prefer to link to pages that are set up similar to mine, like this:
http://www.idea-queen.com/resources.html
(Note my link page has a PR3 right now.......not saying with Google's updates that it will stay that way, but it always has been one under the home page PR).
My other sites need some work with the link pages, so we won't go there.
Plus here's an interesting bit of information for you all.......Direct Sales Helpers has zero link exchanges. It's currently sitting on a PR4 too, and we don't even have a link page. _________________ ~Kara Kelso~

Okay, I'm confused (what else is new! lol!) .... what is the difference between your Additional Resources page and my Craft Directory page at http://easycrafts4fun.com/craft-directory/? I don't understand what you mean by "the pages are in PHP". When I put my mouse over the links to the ones I exchanged with, it takes me right to their webpages....

Oh that page is fine. I was just looking at the site link you gave, and noticed it had PHP pages. I thought you were working with an automated directory. You know the kind that sets up the categories on separate pages, and makes it all automated.
Sorry starting to confuse myself now lol. _________________ ~Kara Kelso~

Hey Bev, I just came across another "craft website" of sorts. It's actually a local website here. I had seen a sign in town for a website (and I always have to check out local sites, lol) Anyway ... she's practically my neighbor! She does link exchanges also but it does look as though she goes through a link directory too. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to cotact her and see if she's interested in swapping. Of course if you are too, lol!
