My partners and I recently started using Craig's List as a way to promote our site and various resources on our site. And to our amazement, we have gained a TON of traffic this way. It's totally free and only requires a minimal amount of time, but for the effort, the traffic is great!

I have tried Craigs List and
1) had a hard time making the ad actually get accepted.
2) once in I have had little or no traffic to the site. I put a counter code on the ad to see how many hits I had.
I'm glad you had success and because its free I dont want to discourage anyone from trying it. Give it a whirl....it can't hurt! |

I think the key is to be creative in where you post and what you post about. We keep our ads short and sweet and we are very pleased with the numbers.
You also have to be consistent. There are four of us and we each post in two states at least 3-5 times a week. I know that's a lot, but there are four of us! I am sure that an individual could do at least 2 states several days a week!!! _________________ Betsy Canevari

Also, we are not promoting a direct sales company, which is off limits. We are advertising our blogs, resource site, free ebook for working at home, and our weight loss ebook. If you post on direct sales, they bump you and you have done all that work for nothing. So if you have your own company or you can cross advertise (list your blog, link them to your site) then it is very helpful. I get a ton of hits on my preschool blog and we can see that they are coming from craig's list because of hittail. _________________ Rebekah Kogelschatz

Which in turn is why we harp continually on having your own website. You can advertise it so many other places. The creation of blogs makes it even easier to have your own internet space if you have a DS only site.
I've barely used craigslist for looking for things. Never thought of advertising and certainly i would have messed it up by coming out like an ad. Thanks for the tips. _________________ Val

Oh! Yeah, we know that. Sorry I guess it did come across as directed right to you ladies, lol. Didn't mean it that way. Just meant to everyone in general who doesn't.
Take care!

I took the Smart Moms advice and am using Craigslist. They are right, you have to come across as "I will help you for free" and link to something free. Then once the person requests your free ebook (or whatever) you can market to them in other ways. For example, here is a CL ad that is working well for me:
"Learn to Sell on eBay - FREE Materials from Power Seller Mom
Expert eBay Power Seller (since 2003) and work at home mom offering free eBay learning tools including:
how-to articles written from firsthand experience
what-to-sell lists
podcast tutorials covering all eBay selling topics
eBay seller discussion forum - get answers FREE
Great information for anyone who wants to learn more about eBay selling as a hobby or home business. Christian mom and entrepreneur paying it forward to help others.
Learn to Sell on eBay - FREE TOOLS (LINK)
Contact me for more information (LINK TO EMAIL)"
Then, they visit my site or email me and I suggest they subscribe to my blog, or give them a free ebook, which has links to all my "stuff" inside. It is a domino effect: You have to use CL to sort of get the fish in the net, and then go from there. It won't work for direct selling. And you have to word your ads slightly different for each city. And some ads don't work at all for certain cities, and some work great. It takes some experimenting and research to make it work for you.

I haven't done well with Craigslist either but ... I do have to note that I might not have given it really "fair chance" as far as time goes. I'd rather just pay for an ad somewhere that I know it's going to be seen and seen by my "target people" than go to Craigslist.
But ... that said, this is not the first place I've heard others rave about it either.
