Here I am to learn something new. SEO should've been the very first thing I ever did before starting a business (keyword research that is) but here I am now trying to comprehend it all. And once again, I'm about ready to pull my hair out
I have gone through Alice Seba's Underachiever SEO course which was a good start however I am still VERY confused on the whole process of finding appropriate key words. I did get a VERY AWESOME SEO bonus for signing up for Patty's mailing list the other day and that was probably the first ebook where I understood a lot of what this guy was teaching. WOW, the lightbulb started to finally go on!
I would love to get some guidance on how exactly I should get through this keyword research. What is your favorite place to search? And if you have time, can you give me an example of what you do from the start to find a good keyword and how you optimize a page once armed with a good keyword/phrase?
I have written quite a few articles now and although I didn't do any keyword research before I think I just needed to get my feet wet and get in there and write something. Now I would like to learn SEO and try to incorporate SEO from here on out.
Am I making sense? I would appreciate any help I can get. _________________ ~Angie~

I'm sorry, I said I'd start some posts on this and then forgot to come back to it. Here is an awesome class to take. It is a lot and you need to follow their recommendation to use a separate email account just for the classes. But you always have the classes in your email files to go back over.
SEO Training classes These are 100% free and easy to follow. They start each class over at the beginning. So if you hit it mid way or towards the end, don't get overwhelmed with it. Just delete them and wait for the next one to start. Cause I'm telling you, it is a lot of emails and you need to start at #1. Kara recommended this class a couple of years ago. I think Lauren and I both took it at the same time actually. _________________ Val

Cool, thanks for the recommendation. I have come across this before but never got around to joining it. Looks like they started this round on 8/15 so the next one is on or around 9/15. I'll have to join once I set up a new email address LOL _________________ ~Angie~

First of all, what Val suggested - go for it! I learned so much from Cricket and highly recommend it. I don't think I've ever learned so much anywhere else. I will warn you, it is a very active class but she packs so much in there ... it's no wonder. Kara and I have even taken the course more than once just to be able to totally absorb it all.
My favorite research tool is Word Tracker, yeah Cricket tried to convert me but - old habits - hard to break, lol! I've never gone beyond the free version either. I've simply used the free version, typed in some keywords and went from there. Word Tracker not only tells you how succesful the words are that you're specifically looking for but also suggests others. And as usual, I'm always way off with my guesses, lol. I'll think a term is highly searched only to find out I was dead wrong OR it's way beyond me even trying to hone in on it, lol!
But yes, DEFINITELY look into Cricket's class - you'll find out everything you need there!
Take care,

Angie, I'm so glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful. This is why I think it's an essential bonus to offer to my subscribers.
I took Cricket's class several years ago, and as Anita said, it's a great class. The one thing to keep in mind about seo is that while there are many people who will try to tell you about Google's algorithm changes and the "latest and greatest beat the search engine" products, the very essential foundations of good optimization do not change.
This is where Cricket's class is a good addition to the bonus book you have from my site. She takes you through the actual "doing" process. I love reading stuff, but I am a visual, hands-on learner, so if you are, too, I highly recommend her class. The best part is that it's free, too.
To search for keywords, I like to start with Wordtracker, but I do own one piece of keyword sofware and that is called, "Keywords Analzyer". It really helps you get into the nitty-gritty of keyword digging, but is a bit advanced if you're just starting out learning seo.

Awesome! You'll have to let us know how you're doing and/or if you have any quesitons. Don't let youself get overwhelmed I had a special folder in my email that I kept all the emails that way I could go through them at my own pace and work as I could. It IS a lot of information in a short amount of time but it is WELL worth it. You'll be so happy you did.
Good luck!
Take care,

Thanks Anita!
I just bought their ebook tonight (I am serious about this stuff now LOL) and just trying to figure out how to use Gmail
And while I'm on the topic of SEO, I am in the process of learning all about how to use itunes and found your SEO podcast segment on there that you did for Smart Moms (is that the name?). I'll be listening to that soon. Looking forward to it. _________________ ~Angie~

Awesome! You'll have to let me know how I did, lol! Speaking like that is so stepping outside my comfort zone. However, I hope I can get more used to it because I really did enjoy it and would love to do more things for MommysHelperOnline.com, MommysHelperCommunity.com & A Tale of 2 Wahms! I guess it's something I'll just have to practice. But first, I NEED to get something other than dial-up!!
Take care,

Ok, I am really stuck as to what page to focus on for this class. She says to pick one and I am back and forth. Someone said to do a product page but my first thought was my newsletter page. What do ya'll think? If you had to pick a page to focus on from my website what would you suggest?
Thanks! _________________ ~Angie~

Actually the homepage is not recommended if I remember right. Just because it is more general than any other page. I think anyway. It's been 2 years since I took the class.
I'd start out with Healthy meals and snacks because it's already pretty targeted in the domain. JMO _________________ Val

Thanks ladies!
Yes, she said not to use our homepage but one of the inner pages. I was thinking the healthy meals and snacks too as it's pretty plain right now with just aff. banners and not enough content. Hmmm decisions! LOL _________________ ~Angie~

The Healthy Meals & Snacks page is a good idea but I also liked the newsletter page idea also. Since building your list is one of the most important aspects of your online business, it's a very good idea to make your page SEO friendly, targetted and more attractive to gain subs. So, just my opinion but either of those two pages would be a good choice.
Later!

hmmm.. I think I'm going to respectfully disagree with her on this one.
Each page should have it's own core keyword target including the homepage.
If you state your H1 tag on your homepage with a clearcut purpose of what the site is about, then I don't see why it should be treated on the backburner. _________________ Patty

I can agree with that Patty. But for the first page they ever do with SEO, it's too hard to identify their target with the keywords. It's just recommended that they use a sub page because it is much faster to change over.
These are usually people that have absolutely NO SEO experience. So they have to rewrite the page, figure out what in the world a keyword even is, etc. It sets them back to use the homepage because it can easily take days for them to just decide on keywords for it. Plus she doesn't want to be answering questions of what keywords to use. She is there to tell them how to do it, not do specific sites for them. _________________ Val
