Hi everybody,

I have a problem that I need some help with. I am in the process of doing research for an affiliate web site I would like to start but how does one go about setting up a web site without knowing HTML? I have set up web sites that use templates and all you do is just add your information to it, like a blog, but other than that I do not have alot of experience with designing a successful web site.

I understand that you have to write a passionate story about your product to pre-sell it and to let the affiliate actually sell the product for you but since I am on a VERY limited budget, I need to know basically how to set up and advertise my product.

In the mean time, while my affiliate web site is getting set up and started, does anyone have any ideas on any data entry or home based jobs that are available.

I would appreciate any information anyone could give me.

Thanks

Glenn (work from home Dad)

Hi again Glenn! Thanks so much for agreeing to bring your questions here ... I know you'll get a lot of helpful advice around here!

First of all, if you really don't want to learn any HTML or mess with that ... do you know you can purchase templates if you'd like. However, I highly recommend learning and doing it yourself. It gives you so much more control over your website.

Especially if you do build an affiliate website with adsense on it ... please, please, please do NOT opt for a free hosting site. It's just not worth it. First of all, your site is covered by their ads and it really takes away your credibility. Let's just pretend that's not even an option. I know a lot of people want to go with free when they're starting out (present company included) but it's really not the way to go. I know you didn't even mention that but, just incase others are lurking around I really wanted to address that Wink

Webhosting and domain names can be bought very inexpensively now. Just a little shameless plug here but, I have hosting starting out at $5.95 a month and domain names at $7.85 a year at http://www.mommyshelperonline.com/web-hosting.html

For learning HTML - www.htmlgoodies.com is an absolute MUST! It's all written in easy to learn language and walks you through step by step. To this day I still visit that website on a regular basis Wink

For an HTML/website editor - check out http://www.notetab.com The free version is really all the more you need. Again, I still use NoteTab to this day. It's super-easy! If you can do a document in microsoft word or word perfect, you can use NoteTab.

Do learn a little about SEO. This is liable to scare you right from the beginning but if you learn some before you start building, you won't end up having to change it later. And keep this in mind ... it's NOT as bad as it looks. It really IS common sense. A few articles that I've written that should help you some are:

Increase Online Traffic
Increase Online Traffic - What NOT To Do
Increase Online Traffic With Directory Listings
The Power of Viral Marketing

There's also an ecourse that is free and a HUGE help for learning SEO. I'll need to look up the link to that but I also don't want to overwhelm you right from the beginning.

I'll be back Wink

Oh and before I forget ... the "online jobs" are very few and far between. I mean it IS possible to find one but very difficult to find. That's how I started too (trying to find). I finally gave up and started my own businesses. I honestly wish I wouldn't have taken so much time trying to find. (Just a little heads up Wink )

Take care,
Anita Smile

How long does it normally take to set up a web site using HTML, especially when someone like myself only has a limited amount of knowledge with HTML?

Also how many web site does someone need to put online in order to make a decent income...$150-$200 a week?

Your first question is a little difficult to answer. There are so many variables to fit in there that I couldn't possibly answer that question. It depends on how quickly you catch on to html, what all you want on your website, how much content you already have, oh this list could go on and on. Really once you get the basic layout finished, you could probably get one up and running within a week. Again, it really depends on how much time you can put into that week, what all you want etc etc.

Eventually, you could earn that income with one website. Although, I must warn you ... once you have your first website under your belt. Don't be surprised if you want to do more. They can become very addicting.

Take care,

They sure CAN become addicting! Someone recently asked me how many domains I owned. I couldn't even tell him! I really had to think about it. Laughing

Blogs are a great way to get a site up and running fast. They are easy to edit and add content to. I recommend Wordpress. Another way to get a feature rich site up and running quickly is with Joomla. LOTS of tools there.

Both options have templates available and allow you to get a nice looking site up and running without knowing HTML. These content management systems also give you a more professional looking site than a lot of site builder programs do. If you don't know HTML, I really suggest using a system like a blog or Joomla to create your site. Then you don't have to worry about layout and design so much...which can GREATLY impact the effectiveness of your site.

I completely agree with Anita in that you do NOT want to use a free web site. People will not take your site as seriously if it is on a free hosting plan. Not only are the ads extremely annoying, but if you want to appear professional and legitimate, pay for hosting. It is a lot more affordable than it used to be and it is well worth investing in a good host for your online business.

www.wordpress.org
www.joomla.org

I hope that helps some.

Oooh, now there's another thing I forgot. Blogs are good to help with traffic to your website also!

I did want to touch on another subject that has to do with this. I know you're planning on setting up an "adsense website". There's been a lot of discussions about this in the "wahm community" because folks are being taught to build almost "cookie cutter - type adsense websites". What's happening is a lot of basically crappy websites are being put up that don't have much more than adsense ads. Please don't get caught up in this because really all you end up doing is ticking off your visitors Wink Make sure you have useful content and most of all, make sure the content is correct. That's another problem I've seen lately. These "adsense websites" are full of incorrect content which of course is a big, big no-no.

Take care,
Anita Smile
