Lauren mentioned this, so I thought it would be good to post. 
Tax IDs aren't too difficult to get, and in many cases you don't even have to leave home to get one. On many state websites there is a form to fill out online to apply. Some are free, while others charge a small fee.
Many states require extra permits to sell certain items, so do be sure to poke around on your state's website while you are there.
To find your state website, do a quick search for [your state] + business tax. Your official state goverment site should come up. Look for state.us in the URL for the right site.

I've just gotten lost when I've gone to the IL site, but you know I don't give up easily-and will try again! Any IL WAHMs who can point me to the exact place? Sometimes I need to be lead by the hand.

Okay-I found it-for Illinois, https://pki.revenue.state.il.us/app/ibr/index.html
Now I only have to have some uninterrupted time to concentrate enough to answer all of the questions, etc. (2 year old is teething and miserable, and won't sleep, just wants to be held!) I may actually have an ID# by the end of the week. Hooray!!! I can apply onlline, but it takes 1-2 days to process the application-and I don't know if the tornado that went through the capital last night will have any effect on that or not.

Good deal! I knew it wouldn't be all that hard to find. I hate when I can't give exact information on something, but I'd be here for days if I was searching for all 50 states. Ok, well, 49...I already know Iowa's tax laws and their website.

Applied for today-no charge! Should have it in 24-48 hours.
I don't know what I was looking at that time I thought it was going to cost me something like $120.00 Way wrong!
Thanks Kara-and now we only need info for the 47 other states thanks to Anita. I'd say to anyone from any other state reading this to add their state's link, and maybe we can get all 50 states listed in this thread.

In California a Seller's Permit is required from the Board of Equalization. Their registration info can be found at http://www.boe.ca.gov/info/reg.htm#sales. There is no fee and it's very simple to obtain one. I've had one for nearly two years.
Registration forms are available online, but the form must be mailed into the office or delivered in person. I went in to get mine and it didn't take too long at all. They printed my permit and handed it to me right then and there.
