I am no expert by any means, but I do know a thing or two. For those of you who want to set up an easy navigation on your site, here's the easy way to do it.
Step 1.
Take all your navigation links and create a new file. Example:
| Quote: | <FONT FACE="Arial" size="2"><Center>
<A title="Buy Candles Online - Highly Scented Soy Candles" HREF="http://www.soy-wax-candles.com/store/" target="_blank"><IMG SRC="goshopping.gif" WIDTH="160" HEIGHT="169" BORDER="0"></A><BR>
<BR>
<A title="Soy Wax Candles" HREF="http://www.soy-wax-candles.com/"><IMG SRC="home.GIF" WIDTH="130" HEIGHT="28" BORDER="0" alt="Soy Wax Candles Home"></A><BR><BR><BR>
<A title="Handmade Soy Candles Online" HREF="http://www.soy-wax-candles.com/products.html"><IMG SRC="productsbtn.GIF" WIDTH="130" HEIGHT="28" BORDER="0" alt="Products - Handmade Soy Candles Online"></A><BR><BR>
<A HREF="http://www.soy-wax-candles.com/current-scents.html"><IMG SRC="btnscents.gif" WIDTH="130" HEIGHT="28" BORDER="0" alt="Current Scents"></A><BR><BR>

Yes that is the ENTIRE file. Name it something easy like "navigation.html".
Step 2.
Create your pages as normal, minus the links you've put in your navigation file. Where your navigation will go, you will need to put the following code:
<!--#include file="navigation.html" -->
Step 3. (Optional)
Some hosts are picky and don't display the file. GoDaddy is already set up to handle SSI files and commands, but others aren't. If you don't see your navigation, you'll need to create or edit your .htaccess file. (If you have to create the file, make absolutely sure the dot is before 'htaccess')
Add the following to the file:
AddType text/html .html
AddHandler server-parsed .html
If this doesn't work, let me know and I'll hunt down the other code. There is a technical answer as to why this has to be done, but I've forgotten it long ago lol.
There are other ways to set up navigation, but this is the easy way for very simple websites. When you need to change your navigation, all you have to do is edit the navigation file and changes will appear on every page you have the code in step 2. When you have a site with 100+ pages, this can be VERY handy. _________________ ~Kara Kelso~

I LOVE YOU KARA!!!
I can't wait to implement this. Such a huge time saver, I could just cry right now. I'm about ready to change some templates and I can use this instead of doing each of my pages. Granted it's only about 50-60 pages on BMW, but still tons of work. Plus, then I always had to re-upload all those pages to hosting after updating. <big sigh of relief> _________________ Val

Well I'm glad this was useful lol. I learned this a long time ago, and I couldn't have lived without it. Glad I found it before Mom's Market had over 500 pages........could you imagine having to change all THOSE pages? _________________ ~Kara Kelso~

Ya know-I always thought that was such a pain in the rear-end! But I have two columns of navigation (like mommyhelperonline does) can this trick be used to create files for L and R columns of navigation?
Oh, I have opened up a huge can of worms for myself. Val-I'm right behind you. Mommy's Helper hosting has a sweet deal on Linux hosting with unlimited domains, and there have been big add-ons in applications that come with the hosting! I think I have to do some changing over!
And I'm learning WordPress thanks to my blog with Patty Gale Designs-can't wait until next week when I can have more quality time to focus on business! New team members, new biz ventures, new collaborations! _________________ Lauren

Lauren, you totally could do both sides. You would just name one leftnavigation.html and the other rightnavigation.html or 1 and 2. Then when you put the code into the appropriate area you just use the corresponding code.
I've never used windows for hosting. I was told not to a long time ago cause it's limiting. I have no idea why not otherwise. Just what the gurus said and I listen to stuff like that. I really don't think there would be any changing if you just contact hosting and say you want to switch over. It's still html.
Can't help you with the drag and drop ftp though. I have no idea what you are talking about there. I merely hit publish on my frontpage program and it goes to my files and puts everything where it's supposed to. Or I go directly into my file manager and upload to the appropriate files. If you can't do it the way you normally do, then let us know. It's super easy to do it other ways.
Isn't wordpress easy? I love it. _________________ Val

I just got a new WordPress blog myself and I am a happy camper.

Totally - I do it all the time on sites. Val explained it perfectly, just name the files different and change the code to the right file name.

Great post Kara! I'm gonna make this one a sticky
And yes, I do more than one all the time. I've even started doing a bottom one with my copyright info ... that way I can update it each year - that is if I remember???

And I'm so glad you learned it BEFORE we started building Mommy's Helper too!!
Happy New Year!!

Kara, oh Kara!
I'm trying to implement this and it's not working for me. I hate when I'm on a roll and have to stand still.
I went into my htaccess files and added that extra you said to.
AddType text/html .html
AddHandler server-parsed .html
Now are there supposed to be spaces before those html's? I am going to go take the spaces out and see if that helps while I wait patiently for assistance. _________________ Val

Ok sometimes the hosts get picky and the code needs to be "just right"
Try either of these:
<!--#include file="navigation.html" -->
<!--#include file="/navigation.html" -->
Also, make sure your .htaccess file is on the root of your site. Like the absolute lowest level possible when you access your ftp files. Sometimes this is where all the rest of your files are, sometimes it's not. _________________ ~Kara Kelso~

You may need to change your .htaccess file. Actually I just had to change mine this morning because I don't know what my host did, but something was changed. Fine last night, different this morning!
Anyway, here's what I changed it to:
Options +Includes
AddType text/html .html
AddHandler server-parsed .html
I also can not have the / before the file name or it comes up with an error. _________________ ~Kara Kelso~
