Last week we received a hand addressed envelope, normal, letter size. There is no return address, and there must have been about 13 $.01-.03 cent stamps covering the right hand side of the envelope!
Definitely caught my eye, and looking at the handwriting, I thought maybe it was a belated holiday card from our friend "Box" (Yes, that's his nickname). I open it up to find that it is a solicitation from some Ind. Mortgage Broker in another state!
How's that for clever? Don't approve of sending out blind ads, necessarily-but it did get his piece of junk mail opened. Eye-catching to say the least. _________________ Lauren

Hmmm ... now that's an interesting way of doing things.
You're starting to sound like Kara and I though (and that IS a good thing, ROFL) But seriously, have you caught yourself analyzing tv commercials or magazine/newspaper ads yet? Hubby gets a kick out of me every time. I am so critical of tv commercials - always saying things like:
- - > Now that was so stupid
- - > What did that have to do with that product
- - > Now there's some good marketing skills (yes, I do compliment too, lol)
Anyway ... it goes on and on. That's a true marketer!
Take care,

Confession...I do analyze tv commercials! I know the other day I was telling Bob why something was so clever in a commercial. Though, more often than not, we're both saying, "now, what did that have to do with..." whatever it was they were selling.
I still don't understand what Abe Lincoln, a WoodChuck and an Astronaut have to do with a sleep-aid. Don't remember the product either. _________________ Lauren

I've analyzed commercials for years. I can't believe how much money peole make writing the unmemorable garbage they do.
My Mom and I analyze businesses. We know we could make a ton of money by going into existing biz's and telling them how to change. Marketing, decor, menu's, etc. We just have a knack for it. But alas, most people won't change what they are doing or don't want to pay for any help.
Too little time to start something else up though. Plus, I love my Mom dearly, but couldn't work with her. Maybe next decade I will go that route. This decade is me and the gym. lol _________________ Val

Though it is clever and it got you to open it, what was your feeling afterward? I just wonder how many sales could come of it.

Lauren, I don't get that one either! Every time I see it, I keep thinking, I've never dreamed about any of those things! Are they saying if I take their sleep aid, I will???? Or that that guy would dream about those things? I have no idea! lol!
I almost didn't open a wedding invitation last week because they used a really strange font on the envelope! It looked like the font that some advertisers use when they are sending you junk and I truly thought it was just junk mail. Then when I opened it up, it was a wedding invitation! Even the invitation was in this strange font. Usually it's elegant looking or classy... this looked... I don't know, almost childish... strange.

Bahahahaha! My guess is the woodchuck has something to do with "sawing wood" slang for sleeping. But Abe Lincoln??? And the astronaut-maybe to imply night and the moon? Oh-I've gotten way too analytical about this silly commercial. Guess the ad is just meant to confound us so we keep wondering about it! But I still don't remember the name of the product. _________________ Lauren

We use to get those type of mortgage offers at my old house. They address it like they know you.
When we first moved here we used to get a very annoying Direct TV salesman call. He would say, something like "Hey, Mike it's Joe...hey listen I wanted to tell you about our new deal...blah, blah blah..." His message was delivered as if he new us or we had talked to him before, which we hadn't. Then a couple weeks later the same guy would leave the same message but give himself a different name (Bob). It was really tacky.
I don't mind getting junk mail in the regular mail but I rarely open anything in an envelope. I will look at the junk mail postcards and I just enjoy looking through catalogs so I don't mind getting catalogs. _________________ ~*Loretta*~

Well, you figured out more than I would have ever been able to figure out, lol! But seriously, some of these commericals these days ... they just have me sitting here thinking ... What the heck did that have to do with that product? Then it makes me absolutely sick to think of the money that went into that commercial! LOL! I mean someone was ... oh my, paid to write the ad. And the money to make, plus the money to run it?? Don't get it! LOL!

I personally don't mind getting "real" junk mail. Not sure why it doesn't matter to me as much. And I used to not open envelopes either but google broke me of that. Yeah google, lol. I used to get my google checks mailed to me but now I have automatic deposit. Well, anyway ... they had changed their mailing material one time only to find out people were throwing their checks away because it looked like junk mail. Needless to say, it made me start taking a better look at my mailings.

Same here ... and a very important thing to keep in mind if you ever run a direct mailing campaign
I bet you never thought this post would turn into this much of a discussion, eh?
Take care,

LOL- I have to laugh because you're right Anita! I was lurking outside putting together the Clipboard, but had to come in and respond - I had just been thinking, as I was reading that this had turned into a very interesting discussion.
And it is good to keep in mind about the mialing campaigns and postcards. I've seen other conversations on other boards where Consultants/WAHMs have said that they thought most people overlooked postcards.
Depending, I'll usually at least look quickly through postcards. Sometimes area Realtors send free monthly recipes, or there might be a useful coupon. They are quick to flip-over, and toss if I have no use for them. _________________ Lauren

Really? Now I have absolutely nothing to back this up other than my own personal opinion ... but, they think people take the time to open junk mail vs taking a quick skim over a postcard??

Now that's a GOOD marketing idea Make it something useful that people will keep! I LOVE IT! Can you imagine someone who keeps all your postcards in a box (with your logo on it of course) because they like all the recipes? That is a really awesome idea!
What else could be put on something like this? (Yeah, another conversation starter!)
For example, I have a magnet on my refrigerator from a mortgage company that lists important resource numbers for our county. Another great idea
Yes, this is one of my favorite subjects!! Keep em coming! I think I need to make a blog post about this today!
Take care,

Very very interesting topic.
I made ups some really cute postcards with vista. I also read somewhere that people dont look at them. I think I'm more likely to look (maybe quick but still look) at a postcard before open something that's obviously junk mail. I made the ones I got to just hand out....I may make some more up now to send. I can try a few and see if I get any response.

Take the chance!
I saw on the news this morning that today is "ALL OR NOTHING DAY." It's one of those bizarre little known holidays. So go for it! _________________

Oh I wish I had known that ahead of time! I could have done a little marketing w/ that one!
Terri - I say go for it! Just make sure it's catchy enough that when they at least look over it ... it'll grab their attention and make them read more!
Later!
