This may sound trite, but the only thing that worked for me was research and a lot of hard work.
You really need to understand something before you jump into it, especially if it requires a fee. And for income opportunities, I'd recommend never paying an upfront fee.
Just do your homework. If you find an opportunity that looks good, do some research.
