Self Promotion on Search Engines and Indexes

Well, this was one of my first tasks to learn, but it has been helping me each month.

You can promote your website or newsletter, and it will auto-submit on a regular basis for you.

What's the catch? This guy doesn't charge a fee - he simply asks for you to 'donate' something. I donated $10 bucks, and I probably won't think about it again for a year. It's prety much on an honor system. And, he forces you to actually LEARN - which is pretty important. Yes, there's a lot of reading material, but there's a lot of tricks to the trade that you'll receive in the process.

So, if you're like me, I like to try things out for a while to see if it works. I believe this system does. Matter of fact, I just promoted my health related newsletter for the first time - and hit most of the major search engines and indexes! I've already been receiving confirmations from the SE's. Keep in mind that getting to the top of the list has more to it, but this is a great start!

I have some opinions about this site, but unfortunately I do not have time to go into detail about it right this minute (I need to go pick up my kids from school). This is a HUGE topic for me, as I spend a LOT of time in SEO (search engine optimization).

I do want to point out real quick that I would NOT use a service related to SEO from a site who has NO PageRank. I see the site was put up in 1997, so this tells me it's been BANNED. It's not just a white bar like some sites have, but a GREY bar. This a very huge red flag to me.

I'll go into more detail why you should NEVER submit your site using an automated tool later (if someone doesn't beat me to it).

Alright here we go!

First off, there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON to submit your site to search engines. EVER. Search engines use a "spider" to crawl the net looking for pages. Their index is updated from the spider, and "submit" is virtually worthless. As long as your new site is linked to sites that are already indexed, your in. It takes no more than a month for new sites to appear (again, assuming you've done any kind of link work).

Second, there is REALLY no reason to RE-submit your site. EVER!! Constantly submitting your site is going to raise a red flag to those search engines. They are going to think "HEY! This site is SPAMMING us! Let's block it now.....". Yup they will BOOT YOU from the index in a heartbeat if they think you are trying to spam them.

Your site is already indexed in Google. Look up this in Google:

See the pages listed? Yup that's what is in their index.

Now for better "rankings" (rankings for specific terms that is) it takes on the page work. NO SUBMITTING REQUIRED. As long as you are updating your site, Google will be updating it too in their index. Again it takes no more than a month (I usually see pages updated in about a week).

As for PR (PageRank) - it means very little. About the only thing I even pay attention to is things like the site you posted - an older site with a GREY bar. The jury is still out on what exactly this means, but I know it ain't good any way you look at it.

Not only does it have a very scary PR, but it has absolutely ZERO backward links. Search this Google to see:

Why not practice what they preach? Or maybe they have with some very bad sites, thus Google is not giving it any credit. Which yes, Google tends to randomly decide what's of weight and what's not, and then only displays the most important of it's backward links. So I find it VERY odd there is NOTHING here. Even though your site is new, you still have at least one:

I HIGHLY recommend taking Cricket's FREE SEO class:

I've been involved with SEO for quite a few years, and Cricket knows her stuff. There were quite a few tips I picked up from here that's REALLY helped my rankings across the board (My site went from averaging 20 unique visitors a day up to 400, and now it's passed 800).

WHEW! Hope this helps explain why I do not trust this site in the least, and wouldn't read any more of the information. Cricket takes things step by step, knows what she's doing, and it's completely free. Wink

Forgot to add..........they seemed to have a lot to say about Yahoo too, which puzzles me. Yes it's an important search engines and yes you SHOULD be optimizing for them too. BUT! Google still holds nearly 60% of the search engine share when it comes down to what people use. Yahoo is only used by about 20%. The rest of the little search engines (and MSN) make up the rest.

Kara has given some great advice. Sites like this just burn me up to be quite honest with you. Evil or Very Mad

Kara also shared a great resource with you with Cricket's SEO class. It is a free class and Cricket is awesome. I do want to give you a heads up ahead of time, this class is quite intensive. Cricket knows exactly what she's talking about and will teach you alot.

However, if you do take it ... take it at your own pace and do not let it overwhelm you. I myself just took it again in March for I think the third time, lol! I learn something new (or a couple somethings, lol) every time.

The first time I took it I got quite overwhelmed and almost gave up. Luckily, the way things are set up, you're able to take this class one step at a time at your own pace - huge help there.

There's quite a few members here who have taken this class a number of times. The general consensus is - excellent course just take your time and go at your own pace.

I wanted Kara to take over this post because she's much more familiar wtih these "scams" and can explain it much better than I. Not to mention gee girl, I'm starting to feel like everything I say to you is a negative, rofl!
