I don't have anything ready for Jillian, but Becca and I have gone "dorm shopping" 3 times already It's been a lot of fun... she's got a list all made up of exactly what she'll need. She's been chatting with the new roommate and they've been deciding on who is bringing what... She has almost everything now... just a few more odds and ends.
Jillian and I are going shopping this weekend for her stuff. She just got her hair cut tonight. It looks really cute. Shorter than even the picture in my icon.... Becca's getting hers cut tomorrow. Jillian doesn't need a whole lot, and only needs maybe 2 pair of jeans and a few new shirts. She got a bunch of new clothes early summer that will work for school...
How about you? Are you ready, or should I say, are your kids ready??? lol!

Oh, how fun, Bev! I bet dorm shopping for your girls was a lot more fun than when I took my sons dorm shopping.
We are definitely not ready yet, especially with the upcoming move. Oh my... Emily's school here starts after Labor Day, but the school in Colorado Springs starts August 20th.
She'll probably start on Mondy, Sept. 15, since we won't be out there until the week before. There was no sense in having her go here for just a few days before we move, but I did talk to the school out there and they said that she'll be fine in starting a couple of weeks later.
The new school doesn't have uniforms like her school here, (darn), but they do have a dress code (yippee!), so this will be our first year of buying real school clothes.
I'm faxing off her admissions application this week and will hopefully get the school supply list before we go.

I'm so not ready either! Luckily, Melanie loves to get clothes so she got a some for her recent birthday for school. Although, she's going to be needing more because both my kids shot up over the summer. Why is it that it seems like my kids grow immensely every summer?? They're going to be giants if they keep this up!!
Take care,

Both of mine are ready as far as clothes , but we need to get supplies. My son is going into the 4th grade and my baby girl is off to pre- k (everyday-allday). I know that the past few years I have been able to get clothes at Old Navy REALLY REALLY CHEAP! Usualy at the end of August they have a store wide sale , and on top of that all the clearance items are an additional 50-75% off . _________________ Diana

Well, Jillian and I went shopping Saturday morning and had a great time. We went to the mall first and Rue 21 had huge sales! They had racks and racks of shirts for $3 each! She got about 6 shirts there... then we got a couple at Old Navy... then we went to Target and she got her jeans and tennis shoes.
So she's done for clothes... we still have some notebooks and stuff to get but I think we're getting those tomorrow night. Becca has an eye appt to get new contacts, so we'll probably stop at Walmart on the way home and get notebooks, paper and stuff there.... then they are basically done!
Still need to get Becca personal products for her dorm, like shampoo and stuff like that.. but we'll probably do that tomorrow too.
Two weeks from tomorrow they both start classes! Becca as a freshman in college and Jillian as a freshman in high school! Wow!

Thankfully, Emily is not a fashion-diva, unlike the 6 year old behind us who at last count, I think has 8 pairs of just flip-flop sandals. Why does a 6 year old need 8 pairs of flip flops?
I have to say, have you seen any of the the new Sears back to school commercials with Vanessa Hudgens strutting her stuff?
Their theme is, "Don't just go back to school... ARRIVE"
Here's the link to the YouTube Video for one of the commercials.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPd-vN3-Oyc
I was looking in this past Sunday's paper and they had an insert so that you could do an assessment of your child's "clothing personality" for pre-teens and even younger elementary girls. No thanks...
The message is obviously that you HAVE to have a certain look for school and if you don't, well, you're not cool.
I love music, I love to go out and dance and I'm not a prude, but the messages sent to these kids via these commercials about how they're supposed to look and dress in order to fit in is really ridiculous.
The school hallway is not a fashion runway. Teen girls already have enough stress to deal with much less trying to conform to a Vanessa Hudgens "ideal" about what to wear to school.
School is for learning. I've already had a talk with Emily about the Sears commercials since they're on the Disney channel, too.
The talks with our daughters have to start early, ladies... I can't do anything about Sears or what the media is going to throw at my kid, but I sure can talk to her and teach her how to make the smart decisions about how to deal with stuff like this.
I present it in a way to ask her the question. "Emily do you think it's really all that important to have ... (this or that) for school just to be cool?"
She gives a thumbs down, which of course, means, "no, it's not important" Smart chickarina, she is! _________________ Patty ---

I totally know what you are talking about Patty.... I have been blessed. Neither one of my girls have ever been hung up on labels. They don't care who makes it or where we buy it, as long as they think they look good in it The majority of both of my girls clothes are purchased at either Walmart or Target. They both love Rue 21, because they like the style of clothes they have there, but neither one looks at labels.

I had to laugh when I read your post, Tara, as I feel the same way!!!!! The whole homework, arguments about going to bed earlier, whiney mornings thing, UGH, I'm not looking forward to it.
My kids don't go back until September 2, but, needless to say, every day they remind me that we have yet to go school shopping, _________________ Sue

oops! I almost forgot ...
Patty you're dead on and no, it's never too early. My daughter is going into 7th - second year at the jr. high. We didn't used to have an issue but now it has to say ... Abercombe or Aeropostale ... then we don't like it.
However, she has been taught a very important lesson this summer and I don't think it'll happen again. It all started one day while she was packing to go to her grandmother's. She picks up a pair of shorts, flips them over to the label and says oh yeay, I'll take these ones. This is by "XYZ" and that label means it's good.
Huh? Alrighty ... time to sit down and have a little chat. ROFL!
And while I agree ... I do like Aeropostale myself ... just because I like the style. It certainly doesn't mean it's "good" cause it comes from there!
Take care,

I love aeropostle! Anytime I can buy my teenager jeans for $29 that she will wear, I am so on it! lol Their prices are good and the quality is much better than stupid hollister. What garbage they toss their name on to and then jack up 4 times more. Now that said I did find a bunch of cute stuff in there yesterday that I wanted. But it was stuff that looked like the gap or old navy, so I'll save my self a few $100 and go there.
The thing I'm looking forward to this year is both of them riding the bus. My daughter is old enough to get up earlier and get on the bus. It's a little bit of a walk, but the neighbor girls will ride also. So I'm all about the jammies until 8:15 when I walk the youngest down there. WOOHOO _________________ Val
