Top Ten Tips for Good Networking
1. Networking is not about selling your business or products to
everyone you meet.
2. Don't come on too strong the first time you meet new people.
3. Share about yourself, not just your business. "People do business
with people they trust."
4. Ask people what they do and invite them to share about themselves
and their business.
5. Listen more than you talk and ask questions that will get people
talking ? not just a yes or no answer.
6. Make mental notes on things people have that might be useful to
yourself or others, or if online make notes.
7. Find common ground with the person you're getting to know. "People
do business with people just like them."
8. If asked what you do don't give someone a long sales pitch. Keep
it short and informative. If they want to know more they will ask.
9. Always tell the person you where talking with it was a pleasure
meeting them and ask if it is ok if you add them to your contact
list.
10. Ask for their business card ? that way you can be sure that there
will be follow up. You can exchange cards if you wish but always get
their card or if online, their email or IM name. Ask permission to
contact them again.

Well, just so you know ... From what I've seen, you do a great job! You really should submit more And with these types of articles, I think it be a great recruiting tool (Just my thoughts here ... thinking out loud)
And when I'm looking for an article for MHMM ezine ... I always stop here and over at www.Wahm-Articles.com (not our site anymore)

Something to remember when networking off-line: people deal with people, not companies.
Most semi-literate Google users can locate a Mary Kay lady or a Xango rep or even a SendOutCards rep if they need one, and the prices are generally the same no matter who they buy from.
What you want to do is connect to them as a person, one who is interested in THEM and what they need, want, like to do in their spare time. They want to be sure of your competence, of course, but at the end of the day, they want to feel appreciated. _________________ Anita Hampl

Yes, thank you for sharing those tips. I loved how you wrote "Ask if it is okay if you ad them to your contact list." I have always just assumed that it was okay if I had a conversation with them, but I can see how it would be much more polite if I ask them first.

| DeeBishop wrote: | Shelly, as always, GREAT tips!! I read so many of your ideas and share them with others... with proper credit, of course! ;o) You're on my Top Ten List of Savvy Marketers. Thanks, again! |
Okay, I gotta ask ... is this a "real list" or just kind of a "figure of speech"? (Yeah, that was as clear as mud!)
The reason I'm asking is because if there really is an "actual list" ... I would love to see it.

Well, it's my real list! But it's not written down anywhere. I just have a few people online who I watch and learn from and Shelly is one of them. Terri Seymour is another, you're another, Anita, Kara is another, Ceci Fredericks is one... hmm... who am I missing?
You know, I started online in 1998 when the 'Net was new. The market I worked with was Internet Marketers, mostly men, but some women, too. I offered writing, editing, and website design back then to the IM world.
Someone - can't remember the guy's name - created a website that included a "Who's Who" in the IM world (I was thrilled to find my name there!) And I thought it was SUCH a good idea! You could visit the site and learn who did what, which sites they owned, etc.
I actually bought a domain at one time - whosthatwahm.com - with the intention of doing the same thing for WAHMs and women, specifically. But I never found the time and just let it expire. I still think it's a good idea, though. _________________ Darlene "Dee" Bishop

I'm on the list? Cool! I'm honored .. thanks!
I agree with everyone on that list and the only one I can think of off the top of my head ... someone I enjoy following very much is Lynn Terry. I've always considered Lynn a bit of my "mentor" so to speak. She's the one who originally got me into affiliate marketing and it all took off from there.
I'll have to see if I can come up w/ any others!
I think that's VERY good idea!
I love that ... WhosThatWahm.com ... very viral
Take care,
